Death in Venice

THE ICONIC NOVEL AS A TOUCHING BALLET

Ballet premiere 1 Nov 2024

Thomas Mann’s (1875–1955) famous short story about the author Aschenbach and his fascination with the young Tadzio, set in Venice plagued by cholera, garnered much attention as it was published in 1912.

John Neumeier’s masterpiece portrays the author as a choreographer dedicated to his art.

Death in Venice, which had its world premiere in Hamburg Ballet in 2003, features music by Bach and Wagner, played both live on piano on stage and from recordings.

The Ostrobothnians

COMEDY AND TRAGEDY COLLIDE IN FINLAND’S ‘NATIONAL’ OPERA

Leevi Madetoja’s (1887–1947) The Ostrobothnians (”Pohjalaisia”) is often called Finland’s national opera, and rightly so. It’s a story about persistence, human rights, and freedom.

Now, The Ostrobothnians has been reinterpreted by some of Finland’s leading creatives. In his first opera, director Paavo Westerberg moves the story forward with cinematic impact.

Édith Piaf – La vie en rose

TAKE FLIGHT WITH THE LITTLE SPARROW

This new ballet offers a caleidoscopic portrait of Édith Piaf’s life. It tells a true story while exploring the depths of the protagonist’s emotions. 

Though the choreography of Reija Wäre embraces the beauty and precision of classical ballet, it also incorporates the flow of contemporary dance to reflect Piaf’s unique gestures and movements.

Animal Farm

A SATIRICAL BEAST FABLE THAT IS HAPPENING NOW

Animal Farm, based on George Orwell’s famous novel, was first performed in Amsterdam in the spring of 2023, quickly earning acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Alexander Raskatov’s compelling music delves deep into the shadows of human nature.

In autumn 2024, The Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera (FNO) will enchant audiences at Musiikkitalo with the launch of a new, unique concert series.
