Peter Grimes
Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes is a powerful opera about a conflict between the individual and the community. It tells the story of Peter Grimes, a fisherman whose apprentice’s death turns an entire English village against him.
Peter Grimes is based on George Crabbe’s landmark poem The Borough (1810). The music of Britten’s breakthrough work echoes with the sounds of the sea, by turns wondrous and frightening. The affecting story and beautiful music made the opera an instant success after its London premiere in 1940’s.
Watch the live stream of Peter Grimes on Thursday 26 November from 6:50 p.m. to enjoy the opera’s monumental choral scenes, which allow the Chorus of the Finnish National Opera to shine at its mightiest.
The broadcast is produced in collaboration with OperaVision and the EU Creative Europe programme.
