Young Dancers’ Evening at the Finnish National Ballet

This season’s Young Dancers’ Evening at the Finnish National Ballet presents three intriguing works.

American choreographer Jodie Gates brings a new contemporary dance work Delicate Balance to the Almi Hall stage, created in collaboration with the youth company of Boston Ballet. Gates has created more than 70 works for ballet and contemporary dance companies, primarily in the United States. This is her first visit to the Finnish National Ballet.

Artistic Director Javier Torres’ 2021 choreography Flock returns to the repertoire. When it was first performed, it could only be experienced as a recording on the Stage24 streaming service due to pandemic gathering restrictions. Now it can finally be seen live in Almi Hall.

The programme also includes excerpts from the classical ballet Paquita.

“After seeing a documentary about birds dying after oil spills, I felt compelled to create a piece about how the human race continues to impact the lives of so many species. As I was choreographing Flock for the Youth Company of the Finnish National Ballet, the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a wake-up call for many of us, but unfortunately we already seem to have forgotten it. During the pandemic, Flock was only presented as a video recording. By bringing it back now, I want to pay tribute to the dancers who created it with me despite the fears of the pandemic. I also want it to serve as a reminder of the damage we are still doing to our planet.”
