Audience outreach spreads the word about opera and ballet

Our audience outreach projects cover all of Finland, offering hundreds of activities each year. These include interactive artistic experiences as well as performances and events targeted at specific audience groups. The majority of our activities are free, but some performances may have a small entrance fee.

Our aim is to spread the word about opera and ballet and encourage people of all ages to get involved in artistic expression. In our projects, we want to foster a safe and inclusive atmosphere, where every participant is valued and capable.

In 2023, we visited 47 municipalities and reached approximately 45,000 people through our projects. We collaborate with various organisations and institutions, including arts institutions, universities, museums, municipalities, daycare centres, residential homes, and organisations representing different industries.

More than 30 years of audience outreach work

The House of the Sun and Carmen were the Finnish National Opera and Ballet’s first inclusive artistic-pedagogical projects within audience outreach. They were implemented together with students from Sibelius Academy, part of the University of the Arts Helsinki, artists from the London Sinfonietta, as well as schools in the Greater Helsinki region. This project was the first of its kind in Finland.

Over the years, we have worked with audience groups of all ages, making music, composing and moving together with prisoners, the homeless, and people in drug rehabilitation. We have also organised sign language and voice interpretation of performances and won an international award for the best children’s opera of the year in 2017.
