Javier Torres to continue as Artistic Director of the Finnish National Ballet until 2029

The Board of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Foundation has decided to extend Javier Torres’ tenure as Artistic Director of the Finnish National Ballet until 31 July 2029. Torres was appointed to the role in August 2022. His current contract was originally set to end on 31 July 2026, including an option for a three-year extension. The extension will take effect on 1 August 2026.

At its meeting on 26 February, the Board of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet unanimously approved the proposal by General Director Gita Kadambi to extend Javier Torres Lópezs tenure as Artistic Director of the Finnish National Ballet.

With a profound knowledge of both classical ballet and contemporary dance, Torres has more than 30 years of experience as a choreographer and educator in renowned ballet companies and institutions. Over the course of his career, he has built an extensive international and domestic network. His strong artistic vision is complemented by exceptional leadership skills and a strategic, sustainable approach to his work. Torres initially danced with the Finnish National Ballet from 1991 to 2008. His most recent choreography in the company’s repertoire was The Sleeping Beauty, a much-loved audience favourite.

Javier Torres began his tenure as Artistic Director of the Finnish National Ballet on 1 August 2022. His original fixed-term contract was set until 31 July 2026, with an option for a three-year extension.
