introduction
Kaisa-Liisa Logrén is a director and performance artist whose work has taken her to the stages of both institutional theatres and independent companies. She has worked particularly on premieres of new Finnish plays. Logrén is a long-standing member of two independent performing arts communities: in the Toisissa tiloissa collective, she explores performance through transformation, while at Myllyteatteri she investigates a multifaceted theatrical language. Radio drama is also close to her artistic practice, and she occasionally works as a teacher and actor.
Logrén’s artistic interests include creating space and tranquillity, strengthening experiences of joy and sensuality, paying attention to what is close at hand, and exploring the sense of historical continuity within us. Her stylistic ideals include a sense of spaciousness, subtle transformation, playfulness and economy.
Logrén was drawn to The Sugar Factory primarily by an observation she made while directing bel canto singers: operatic singing has the capacity to energise the listener more powerfully than spoken theatre. She enjoys working in small groups and experimenting with different approaches. She is particularly interested in exploring and reflecting on conventions of classical opera, such as repetition and the direct articulation of inner experience.
Logrén lives with her family in the countryside of southern Häme. She enjoys nature, spending time with those close to her and learning new skills.
