introduction
Anna Viitala is a Helsinki-based dramaturg, playwright, screenwriter, director and lyricist.
She graduated as a dramaturg from the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
Throughout her career, she has worked on major stages, in the independent theatre scene, and across film, music and dance.
In her work, she is drawn to cathartic experiences, passionate subjects and people, the union of the sublime and the lowly, identity and origins, time and freedom, love, memory and death. To epic things, and to the fatal impact one human being can have on another.
“I’m interested in layering different times and things: childhood and adulthood, the past and the future, the real and the magical, the serious and fun, and in how something personal can become something vast, total and colossal.
I mean dreams, memories, fantasies, sex, horror, grief and ecstasy.
Things that make your heart pound.”
