Javier Torres’s new, stronger Giselle
For choreographer Javier Torres, the portrayal of women in the iconic ballet Giselle felt outdated. In the ballet, first performed in 1841, the heroine Giselle is a romantic and fragile maiden, waiting to be courted by a man. Torres’s new production reimagines her as a strong female figure who takes charge of her own destiny.
“Art bears a huge responsibility in creating contemporary images of women,” Javier Torres emphasises in the video.
