A multidimensional journey into the erratic world of dreams
Nocturno is the new collaborative work by contemporary circus company Circo Aereo and contemporary music ensemble defunensemble – a multidimensional journey into the erratic world of dreams, carried by the hypnotic movement of the body and a rich sonic landscape.
Created by a multidisciplinary team, the piece is visually lush and experimental in its expression. Nocturno constructs a nocturnal, abstract world in which virtuosic physical performance, live music, and scenographic visual elements that reshape the stage space are interwoven.
Nocturno continues the collaboration between director Sanna Silvennoinen and composer Sami Klemola, which began in 2016 with Concerto Planos. That work likewise combined physically powerful contemporary circus, experimental contemporary music, and a visually striking approach to staging. Concerto Planoswas praised for its seamless fusion of art forms – and Nocturno is built on a similarly open artistic approach.

Circo Aereo is Finland’s first and longest-running contemporary circus company. Its artistic work and productions have played a key role in the development of new circus as an independent art form in Finland and in the international breakthrough of Finnish circus in the 2000s.
The company’s multidisciplinary performances have been seen thousands of times in more than 40 countries across five continents. In 2009 the group was awarded the Finland Prize. Circo Aereo collaborates with professionals from circus, object and physical theatre, visual arts, dance, and music.
Communication with the audience and the creation of unique experiences are core values for the group. Reduction to the essential and a precise choice of means of expression form the basis of Circo Aereo’s understated yet highly charged style.
Founded in 2009, defunensemble quickly filled a gap in Finnish music life by presenting electroacoustic music in a professional and systematic way. The ensemble brings the most compelling electricity-based contemporary music from around the world to Finland, actively commissions and premieres new works, and creates concerts that engage with several subgenres of experimental music.
defunensemble’s musicians and music technologists represent the very top of their field in Finland. In addition to the country’s major festivals, the ensemble performs internationally on a regular basis. Since its founding, its artistic director has been Sami Klemola.
