An opera about courage

A human to the best of their ability is a love story between a man and a woman, but without the traditional romance. It is also a story about the courage required to reveal one’s true self. The narrative unfolds in the mind of a young man trapped in his memories and self-doubt. As he strives to build the life he really wants, he is supported and encouraged by a woman who is more than just a friend.

This chamber opera, which premiered at Turku City Theatre in April 2024, will be performed at Almi Hall, the smaller stage of the Finnish National Opera, in autumn 2025. Based on a libretto by bestselling author Tommi Kinnunen, the opera is composed by Joel Järventausta, who has already found international fame despite his young age. The production is directed by Pertti Sveholm. The cast features one of Finland’s leading opera singers, Waltteri Torikka, alongside actress Pihla Penttinen, who is known for her extensive work in television and theatre. The score is performed by a six-piece orchestra, conducted by Marko Hilpo.

The chamber opera has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland, the Finnish Cultural Foundation’s New Classics fund, and the Matti Salminen Foundation.
