Finnish National Opera’s new commission Morgonstjärnan – The Morning Star premieres in January 2026

Morgonstjärnan – The Morning Star is an opera composed by Sebastian Fagerlund to a text by Gunilla Hemming from Karl Ove Knausgård’s acclaimed novel.

”The story of The Morning Star, with its collision of the unfathomable, mystical world and modern society, has been a great source of inspiration for me. The story of fear, curiosity, uncertainty, anger, and love is timeless. It holds a mirror to us, providing a deep and powerful reflection of our society and life,” composer Sebastian Fagerlund says.

A timely libretto about modern lives

Gunilla Hemmings libretto, based on Karl Ove Knausgårds novel, is set in the city of Bergen, Norway, but the events could unfold anywhere in Europe. On a sweltering late August evening, a giant star rises above the city. At first, few people take notice, but little by little, its regular appearance grows impossible to ignore.

The opera tells a relatable story of modern-day characters who are trying to make sense of the world and deal with the personal chaos in their lives – alcoholism, career disappointment, crises of faith and despair.

“I have immense admiration for Karl Ove Knausgård’s ability to turn the small and simple into grand and significant. In The Morning Star, the characters each face existential questions of life and death and profound moral dilemmas, all within the context of their ordinary lives. Knausgård skillfully weaves these poignant moments into their everyday reality. I believe the audience will be able to identify with these fellow travelers and experience both horror and tenderness as the story unfolds,” says Gunilla Hemming.

The world premiere of Morgonstjärnan – The Morning Star will take place on 30 January, 2026. The new production is conducted by Chief Conductor Hannu Lintu and directed by the Artistic Director of the Finnish National Opera, Thomas de Mallet Burgess, and it is the first adaptation of Knausgård’s work for the operatic stage.

The distinguished creative team also includes set designer Leslie Travers, costume designer Tracy Grant Lord, lighting designer Matthew Marshall and movement director Sue Mythen.

Cast details, performance dates, and ticket sales information will be announced in spring 2025. Read more about Morgonstjärnan – The Morning Star.
