introduction
Ona Korpiranta is a Helsinki-based theatre director and playwright. She graduated from the Directing programme at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki in 2021. She has studied dramatic arts in four different countries, with studies in cities including Washington, D.C. and São Paulo.
. Korpiranta directs both new Finnish plays and contemporary texts for the stage from abroad.
Her productions combine a strong visual language and precisely drawn characters, with a clear ambition to engage with contemporary social issues and make an impact. She is particularly drawn to modern drama and hybrid forms that approach serious subjects with humour, contradiction and an element of surprise.
Korpiranta’s work is ensemble-driven, and her theatrical language emerges from the tension between music, movement and text.
Her recent directing credits include the Finnish premiere of Icelandic playwright Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson’s Seven Fairytales of Shame at KOM Theatre, Liv Strömquist’s Punaisin ruusu puhkeaa kukkaan at Oulu Theatre, and Solaris, based on the novel by Stanisław Lem, at Turku City Theatre. Her debut play Sinä päivänä kun Luoja teki isän premiered at Q-teatteri and was subsequently selected for the main programme of the Tampere Theatre Festival.
Alongside directing, Korpiranta develops and writes original work for both stage and screen.
