Composer

Aurora Hentunen

INTRODUCTION

Aurora Hentunen is a pianist-composer best known for her work in the jazz scene, where she leads her own ensemble and is active as a performing musician. In her work, Hentunen often explores ideas related to nature and its protection, as well as broader social themes.

She strives to approach music-making with an open mind, continually challenging herself and pushing boundaries.

Working in various artist residencies and living abroad have been particularly important in enabling encounters with people and artists from a wide range of backgrounds and environments. In addition to composing for her own albums, Hentunen has written extensively for big bands, chamber ensembles, choirs, and symphony orchestras.

“For me, creating music means freedom to seek out new zones of discomfort to explore and tame. Opera, as such a multifaceted art form, therefore offers an incredibly inspiring new opportunity.”

Hentunen has released three albums, the latest of which, Little Further, won Jazz Album of the Year at the 2025 Indie Awards.

Her work as a composer has been supported by organisations including the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Kone Foundation, and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
