Moving On
Young dancers’ evening at the Finnish National Ballet
Young dancers’ evening at the Finnish National Ballet presents a spectacular mix of the old and the new. In addition to the world premieres of Julian Nicosia and Craig Davidson’s contemporary dance choreographies, the repertoire comprises an excerpt of The Kermesse in Bruges. This rarely performed ballet, which premiered in 1851, is opportunity for dancers to showcase their mastery of the challenging Bournonville technique. The dancers of Finnish National Ballet will rehearse it under the guidance of Dinna Bjørn, one of the world’s foremost authorities on August Bournonville’s choreographies.
Fragments of Time
“One of the things I love to do is to go back to my earliest memories of when I was a child. Every time these memories reappear, I try to understand why they come to my mind and especially why at that particular moment.
Our memories are often connected to the present. Is there always a reason for a memory to come back or is it sometimes a pure coincidence? Whether from the past or the present, these “moments” need each other in order to keep creating the future.
Fragments of Time is about memories and moments that haven’t yet become memories. How they coexist, and how the past and future can be integrated into a single moment. I also tried to highlight the preciousness of youth. That limitless energy, enthusiasm, and determination.
In this creation, we move from neoclassical style to a more contemporary aesthetic, from classical music to darker, futuristic sounds. I think it really represents the journey and the phases I’ve been lucky enough to go through as a dancer and as a person.“

The Kermesse in Bruges (divertimento)
The Kermesse in Bruges, which had its world premiere at the Royal Danish Ballet in 1851, depicts life in a Flemish town in the 17th century. Choreographer August Bournonville was the pioneer of Danish ballet. He was born in Copenhagen to a Franco-Swedish family in 1805 and trained as a dancer under the guidance of his ballet master father in Denmark and Paris. Bournonville worked as a soloist dancer in Copenhagen and Paris. Subsequently, he headed the Royal Danish Ballet for 50 years, creating over 50 full-length narrative ballets and a large number of shorter works for the company. Bournonville’s style is characterised by lively facial expressions, graceful upper body movement, and fast footwork.
ReFrame
“ReFrame looks at how transformation can re-create something anew.
It’s about continual shifts and changes, looking at a particular space from a new perspective, and different possibilities and opportunities presenting themselves that reframe and become changed.
From one place to another.
Constantly evaluating one’s perspective of space.”
