Swirling waltzes and bubbly happiness all around

Falke, a notary, was once left out in town dressed as a bat. As his revenge, he conjures a series of misunderstandings. Die Fledermaus, which bubbles with lighthearted joy, is an immortal classic in the world of Viennese operetta. It owes its enduring success to true-to-life characters and a fun and fast-paced story, and most importantly, the cheerfully melodic music by Johann Strauss (1825–1899).

At the Finnish National Opera, Die Fledermaus is brought to life in a vibrant display of colour, movement, and kaleidoscopic swirls, all in the whimsical mood of a Viennese waltz and the spirit of the 19th century. The operetta is performed in Finnish.

“Fun, colourful, joyful, and not lacking in humour either. A great choice for an opera novice, too!”

synopsis

As a prank after a fancy dress ball, Eisenstein once left Falke, a notary, to spend the night in town dressed as a bat. Falke is longing for revenge and conjures a series of misunderstandings. He talks Eisenstein into attending Prince Orlofsky’s party, where he presents various disguised guests to each other. Eisenstein’s wife Rosalinde has become a Hungarian countess, her chambermaid Adele pretends to be an actress, Eisenstein takes on the role of a marquis, and Frank, a prison director, is costumed as a chevalier.

Eventually the pretention is exposed, illusions are shattered and the entire troupe ends up in prison. In the hilarious denouement they all agree: the champagne was to blame for everything.
