The roughest opera of the year

Wozzeck: Olafur Sigurdarson; Helena Juntunen

“See this show!” – Chicago Tribune

Wozzeck is a story about an oppressed soldier, his mental breakdown and his final desperate act. The interpretation of Sir David Vicar, one of today’s most notable opera directors, has been praised from Chicago to Geneva. In Spring 2019, the powerful production will arrive at the Finnish National Opera.

Recommended for children over the age of 12.

Wozzeck is a production by the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

“Wozzeck represents a sustained howl of rage at the futility and agony of existence in a human society that has lost sight of the value of human worth. Two protagonists, Wozzeck and Marie are lost in a world of poverty, neglect, indifference and injustice. Wozzeck’s hideous murder of Marie, brutal and pointless is an act of hopeless, uncomprehending desperation. Wozzeck remains, now nearly 100 years after its premiere one of the most painful, honest and direct commentaries on human life ever imagined.”

– Sir David McVicar

A deeply moving 20th century masterpiece

Wozzeck is one of the great masterpieces of 20th century opera. It echoes the sentiments of the First World War and the modern era. Alban Berg’s score conveys the emotions of the oppressed soldier with astonishing clarity. The stark music is conducted by Hannu Lintu.

Synopsis

The browbeaten soldier Wozzeck is subjected to bizarre experiments by a doctor and trashed by a malicious captain. At least he has the lovely Marie – until the drummer of the regiment becomes smitten with her. Wozzeck sees them dancing together, has a fight with the drummer and loses. He takes Marie to the forest and kills her. Wozzeck wades into a pond to wash the blood off his hands. In the end, playing children run off to look at Marie – one of whom is the son of Wozzeck and Marie.
