In the Next Steps evening, the young talent of the Finnish National Ballet will take over the stage of Almi Hall. The event will comprise four works: two world premieres and two interesting extracts from the gems of classical ballet. Most of the dancers will be members of the FNB Youth Company, who have started their professional dancing careers in the past few years.
Choreographer Javier Torres
Another of the evening’s contemporary dance works is Javier Torres’s brand new choreography. Originally from Mexico, Torres previously worked as a dancer at the Finnish National Ballet. During his choreographer career, Torres has created more than 20 works, including the full-length ballets Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast for the Finnish National Ballet. What’s more, Torres has worked as a visiting teacher at various dance companies and lectured at dance medicine symposia. He is also a ceramics artist.
Choreographer Emrecan Tanış
Turkish-born Emrecan Tanış has created a variety of contemporary dance choreographies, which have been performed in Finland and at international dance festivals in Germany, Britain and Brazil. To date, the Finnish National Ballet Youth Company has performed Tanış’s choreographies Corridors, The deep dark white and Sand. This year he presents another brand new choreography for the Next Steps evening. Besides working as a choreographer, Tanış has danced at the Finnish National Ballet since 2010.
Two classical ballet gems
The Next Steps evening gives young dancers the chance to showcase their skills in two demanding numbers of world class classical ballet. We first travel to the captivating Kingdom of Shades from La Bayadère, after which the wedding celebration of Don Quixote’s Kitri and Basilio turns up the heat.
12 talented young dancers
The Finnish National Ballet Youth Company, founded in 2013, is home to 12 young dancers. Half of the dancers of the international group are from Finland, while half come from countries as diverse and remote as Japan, Korea and New Zealand. Besides the Next Steps evenings, the members of the FNB Youth Company perform alongside FNB dancers in Main Stage productions. The FNB Youth Company is financially supported by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.
