A new Finnish chamber opera for sobersides and tricksters

Kansanradio opera is based on the rich material produced by the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yleisradio’s programme Kansanradio (“People’s Radio”) that has been running for over forty years. In Kansanradio, regular people get a platform to speak up their minds about topics that either bother or delight them. The opera brings together the art of puppetry and chamber opera. Kansanradio follows the format of a radio show but it also highlights the story of a 98-year-old Aili.

”Do we actually listen to each other? We all have our own little issue that might seem even more important than world peace and ecocide. Though one can always form an opinion of the latter topics, too, when necessary. At best, the phone calls Kansanradio receives, are like poetry inspired by grand life stories, colorful human destinies, and interesting observations on everyday life.”

– Timo Väntsi, librettist

Synopsis

There is something on 98 year old Aili’s mind and she wants to write to Kansanradio about it. However, other citizens’ issues roll over, and Aili keeps putting off voicing her own matter. Aili’s life is being followed through flashbacks, all the way from her pre-war childhood to old age. In between: wartime ordeals, budding love, marriage, adulthood troubles, fortunes and losses, new beginnings one after another. What does Aili have to say after 98 years of life experiences?
