Giselle

It is midnight.

A group of creatures dressed in white meet in a dark forest glade for a strange ritual. These seductive creatures are maidens betrayed in love who rise from their graves at midnight to lead into dance any young men lost in the forest. Giselle is a recent addition to their ranks.

Synopsis

Giselle, a young maiden living in a small village, is in love for the first time in her life. Her love, Albrecht, is no ordinary peasant, as he introduced himself to her; he is a Duke and already betrothed to another. The news of Albrecht’s true identity breaks Giselle’s weak heart, and she joins the wili, spirits of young women who died before their weddings.

A full synopsis and background information are available in the programme booklet.

Giselle

“The power of Giselle’s love transcends hatred and revenge. Her love is inexhaustible and allows Albrecht to find peace. That is what makes this such a perfect Romantic ballet.”

– Cynthia Harvey

Giselle is a ballet for romantics

Giselle is a typical Romantic ballet. Act I is set in the real world, while Act II is set in the spirit realm in a spooky forest. The plot is a Romantic love story that ends unhappily because of the man’s deception. The story was influenced by Heinrich Heine’s book Über Deutschland, which contains an account of the ghostly wili, or spirits of women who died young.

The challenging title role in Giselle has been performed by numerous world-famous ballerinas such as Anna Pavlova, Galina Ulanova and Margot Fonteyn. In addition to demanding principal roles, the ballet has impressive crowd scenes, the most hypnotic of which is that of the group of wili in Act II.
