A hundred years of major and minor

The Finnish National Opera celebrates the centenary of Finland’s independence with joy. A good time for all is guaranteed by familiar songs, popular soloists, Finland’s only professional chorus, a top-notch orchestra and the dancers of the Finnish National Ballet. Jere Erkkilä, director of CircOpera, brings fireworks to the stage on a December evening.

The story of our country rising from the devastation of war to its current splendour is presented in an entertaining and handsome setting, featuring iconic views and achingly beautiful pieces of music from Finnish master composers such as Jean Sibelius, Leevi Madetoja, Aarre Merikanto and Einojuhani Rautavaara.

The gala concert features Finnish star soloists Camilla Nylund, Tommi Hakala and Mika Pohjonen. The conductor is Pietari Inkinen, whose international career is on the rise.

Finland Celebrates!

Gala concert for the centenary of Finland’s independence

Watch recording of the live streaming of Finland celebrates! that was recorded on Tuesday 5th of December. Production: HSTV and Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

Celebration of Finnish music

The concert programme includes pieces of music from Finnish master composers such as Maamme by Pacius and Soluppgång and Norden by Sibelius. The programme also includes acts from Madetoja’s most famous opera Pohjalaisia. Compositions of Rautavaara, Merikanto, Kortekangas, Klemetti, Hakola and Collan are also performed in the gala concert, and the last piece heard is – of course – Finlandia by Sibelius.

Dancing for Finland

Valse triste

The Finnish National Ballet performs four pieces in the gala concert. Dancers Terhi Talo and Tuukka Pietulainen are soloists in acts from Marjo Kuusela’s legendary The Seven Brothers and Kenneth Greve’s ballet spectacle Land of Kalevala. The Swan of Tuonela (music by Sibelius, choreography by Imre Eck) is performed by Yimeng Sun and Jani Talo. The dancers in Jyrki Karttunen’s Valse Triste are Salla Eerola and Tiina Myllymäki. Young dancers of the Ballet School also perform in the gala concert.
