An evening with French Maestros

Patrick Fournillier, the Principal Guest Conductor at the Finnish National Opera, conducts the majority of opera classics in our repertoire. Now the maestro will showcase his style in an evening of French music, which will envelop the audience in sophisticated, mesmerising and rhythmically enticing sounds.

The concert brings together three French masterpieces, the first of which is Gabriel Fauré’s series Pelléas and Mélisande. This mysterious play has inspired many composers, including Jean Sibelius, but Fauré was the first to put it to music.

Next up is one of composer Albert Roussell’s most popular works, the colourful and cadenced Symphony No. 3. Though it counts among the most important French symphonies, it has rarely been performed in Finland.

The concert ends with Gloria for soprano, a mixed chorus and orchestra by Francis Poulenc, in which the composer impressively blends serious and light tones.

Anu Komsi dazzles as Gloria’s soloist

Soprano Anu Komsi will shine as the soloist of Francis Poulenc’s Gloria. Her repertoire ranges from renaissance music to progressive jazz to contemporary music, and includes more than 60 opera roles.

“Making music is important. Of course, we could live without music, but life would be nowhere near as good.”

The Orchestra of Finnish National Opera and Ballet

“I think each orchestra has its own unique personality, just like each person. Sometimes you find perfect chemistry between the conductor and the orchestra, and that’s when everything just falls into place. That’s exactly what happened with the Orchestra of the FNOB. They trust me and I trust them.”

-Patrick Fournillier

The Orchestra of the FNO is the largest orchestra in Finland. Founded in 1963, the Orchestra’s membership was increased significantly with the move to the new Opera House in 1993. Today, the Orchestra has 111 members. In addition to its proper job – opera and ballet performances – the Orchestra regularly gives concerts.

The Chorus of the Finnish National Opera

Chorus

Poulenc composed Gloria only four years before his death. The masterwork performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet and Anu Komsi reflects his multifaceted and extensive experience.

The Chorus of the FNO is Finland’s only full-time professional choir. It has been an organised professional choir since 1945. At the moment, the Chorus has 50 auditioned members, most of them graduates of the Sibelius Academy.
