A milestone in Finnish opera

Ancient Finnish mythology, Wagnerian music, Symbolism – Erkki Melartin, known for his elegant tonal colours, created a fascinating masterpiece in his only opera, Aino. The story, taken from the Kalevala, is familiar to all Finns: Aino is a young maiden who drowns herself rather than give herself to Väinö, the old wizard. The mythical tale gains depth through nature mysticism, as Aino identifies herself with a birch tree and looks to the Sun as her bridegroom.

This unique milestone of early Finnish opera will be performed in concert, the cast including Helena Juntunen, Juha Kotilainen, Jyrki Anttila, Anna-Kristiina Kaappola and Jeni Packalen.
