‘Memories of the Future’ immersive art competition winner is Echo

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet’s international open call for concepts for an immersive, interactive art piece has now officially concluded. Out of 195 applications, 8 teams were shortlisted to take part in the Finals at the First Session Conference (30th to 31st May) in Helsinki, Finland. After carefully analyzing the concepts and pitches presented at the event, the jury chose the winner.

The winning team’s working title for the art piece is Echo. The chosen team is formed by Essi Huotari, Joonas Nissinen, Heikki Heiskanen, Minja Axelsson, Olli Kilpi, Iina Taijonlahti and Saara Mäkinen from Helsinki. The jury stated in their review: “The idea was creative and offered the most development possibilities. The universal thematics resonated with the whole jury. Most importantly, music was the focus of the experience.”

The team will now start bringing the concept into fruition in collaboration with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, the art piece’s composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, and dramaturge Paula Vesala. The immersive art piece will premiere by 2020 and will tour internationally at relevant festivals.

The competition was part of the FNOB’s ongoing Opera Beyond project, which aims to bring emerging technology, such as VR, AR, AI and spatial sound, to the performing arts.
