As the term of the current Artistic Director of the Finnish National Opera comes to an end next year, we are seeking a new Artistic Director for a fixed-term appointment for the term 1 August 2023 to 31 July 2027, with the option of a three-year extension. The appointment will include part-time orientation and repertoire planning ahead of the above start date, by mutual agreement.
The Artistic Director of the Finnish National Opera (FNO) is a significant operator in a national and international context. The Artistic Director is responsible for defining the artistic vision for the company. This high-profile position also has the wider potential to influence the future of opera and the status of art in society at large.
Your role as Artistic Director of the FNO will be to uphold and develop the high artistic standard of the FNO in accordance with our strategy. You will have experience of artistic leadership in the field of opera, the ability to articulate a clear artistic vision, language skills, a recognised profile with international networks and the ability to engage effectively at the highest level of Finnish society.
To succeed you will need to demonstrate organisational skills and the ability to balance artistic ambition and long-term financially sustainability. You will have excellent leadership and communication skills.
The duties of the Artistic Director include artistic and production planning and the recruitment of opera singers, other opera department personnel and guest artists. The Artistic Director manages both the Orchestra and the Vocal Department of the FNO and has budgetary and financial oversight of the company. As a member of the Management Team of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet (FNOB), the Artistic Director participates in the operational and strategic leadership of the FNOB as a whole. The Artistic Director reports to the General Director of the FNOB.
The Finnish National Opera and Ballet is a national arts institution, an opera and ballet company of a high international standard. Through touring performances, school operas, recordings, live streaming and radio and TV broadcasts, the FNOB maintains a nationwide and international presence. Generally, the FNOB stages four new opera productions and three new ballet productions per year. Together with revival productions, the FNOB has a different programme each week, with performances of up to dozens of works each year. The FNOB performs both established classics and contemporary opera and ballet, with a special focus on new Finnish works.
