Presenting Opera and Ballet season 2017–2018

The next season of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet will include grand premieres, three Verdi masterpieces and a variety of ballet. The autumn will begin with the ballet Lady of the Camellias by Val Caniparoli and the world premiere of a Finnish opera, Sebastian Fagerlund’s Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata), based on the film by Ingmar Bergman. This autumn hidden memories and repressed emotions take centre stage.

The autumn’s most anticipated opera: Höstsonaten – The Autumn Sonata

This autumn’s most anticipated opera production is Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund’s world premiere of Höstsonaten – Autumn Sonata, based on the film by Ingmar Bergman. The layers of a complex relationship between a mother and a daughter are unveiled little by little. The role of Charlotte in this opera was written for Anne Sofie von Otter, one of the most celebrated mezzosopranos of our time.


Lady of the Camellias opens the ballet season

Lady of the Camellias tells the fateful love story of a mysterious lady and a young French gentleman. This ballet, based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils is the most famous creation of American choreographer Val Caniparoli. The internationally acclaimed production is brimming with powerful emotions and dramatic expression.
