A cornucopia of brilliant arias

Verdi was at the height of his powers when writing this opera and lavished magnificent music on its arias and choral scenes. The story tells of brothers separated at birth who end up fighting for opposing sides in a conflict: a tragedy that offered Verdi dramatic twists and turns and strong characters. Il trovatore was the world’s most popular opera in its day, thanks to its catchy tunes and infectious rhythms.

Recommended for children over the age of 12.

A co-production of Gran Teatre de Liceu and Ovideon Teatro Campoamor.

“People say that the opera is too sad and there is too much death in it. But life, after all, is only about death. What else is there?”

– Giuseppe Verdi

A fresh version of the masterpiece

Il trovatore will be performed as a fresh version produced by the famed opera house of Barcelona, the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The director and set designer Joan Anton Rechi has made artist Francisco de Goya a part of his production. Goya’s series of etchings “The Disasters of War” depicts the brutal war fought in the setting of Il trovatore. “I want to transform the opera house into a gigantic artist’s canvas,” Rechi says, describing the projections of Goya’s art. “Goya is like the narrator, the troubadour who tells us the tragedy of love, revenge, war and death with his brush, showing us the destruction brought on by war.” The conflict between the beauty of the music and the violent images of war lends a new perspective to Verdi’s immortal opera.

Synopsis

Azucena once kidnapped one of the two sons of Count Luna, intending to kill him, but instead killed her own son and raised the kidnapped boy as her own. Now there is a civil war in the kingdom, and Manrico and Count Luna are enemies, unaware that they are actually brothers. They have only one thing in common: they are both in love with the lovely Leonora. Was leads inexorably to tragedy, as the Count executes Manrico and only then is told the truth by Azucena: he has just killed his own brother.
