A drama concert about the lives of Toivo and Alma Kuula

Saaristo-ooppera (The archipelago opera) brings Alma and Toivo Kuula’s heartrending romance to the Almi Hall. The monologue of Alma Kuula and the immortal songs of Toivo Kuula paint the picture of the lives of two youngsters, their faith in art and their great mission in the rise of Finnish nationalism. The lovers endured the hardships, but just when all was supposed to be well, fate decided otherwise. Their lot was written in the stars.

Recommended for children over the age of 9.

Toivo ja Alma Kuula

“It’s the 18th of May today, the spring is at its most beautiful outside with birds singing in the parks to their hearts’ content. But for us, it’s autumn.”

Alma Kuula sits next to her husband who has been shot in the head, remembering the happy moments and the hard times, singing Toivo Kuula’s finest songs. The two believed in eternal youth and love written in the stars, but the bloody civil war of 1918 changed everything.

The role of Alma is sung by soprano Marjukka Tepponen, with pianist Jukka Nykänen as Toivo.

Synopsis

The monologue begins at the Vyborg district hospital on May the 18th, 1928. Toivo Kuula has been shot on Mayday as the jägers and the civil guards celebrated the conquest of Vyborg. Now Alma sits at Toivo’s bedside and reminisces about their years together. Toivo Kuula was still married when Alma Silventoinen first met him in 1906. Their courtship was frowned upon, and they could only be together while studying in Italy and France.

Abroad, however, Toivo’s jealousy grew unhealthy. He was only granted a divorce in 1914 and was able to marry Alma. The couple’s life was overshadowed by want, as Toivo lost his position as a conductor and the pregnant Alma could no longer give concerts. In the end, Toivo had no choice but to accept another conductor position in Vyborg. The Kuulas were embroiled in the civil war, which led Toivo into the fateful shooting at the chaotic May Day party.
