Funds of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation advances the cause of Finnish opera and ballet arts by supporting opera and ballet work. Its funds award grants and stipends to encourage and reward creative and performing artists as well as other professionals in the field of opera and ballet. On top of this, the foundation also supports opera and ballet arts through direct donations to the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

The foundation also promotes awareness and appeal of the Opera House, both materially and immaterially, in Finland and around the world.

Esa-Pekka Salonen’s fund

The original investment of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s music and technology fund derives from a donation by Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Artist in Association at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. The purpose of the fund is to support new opera and ballet arts with a particular focus on technology. The fund provides financial support as well as awards, grants and stipends to individuals involved in the work of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. It supports commissions of new compositions and multimedia productions, as well as other projects in line with the fund’s purpose. The fund may also make donations to the Foundation of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation

The purpose of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation is to promote Finnish opera and ballet arts and their support functions to improve the attractiveness and appeal of the Opera House. The fund awards grants to develop the skills and abilities of creative and performing artists in the field of opera and ballet arts, the students of the Ballet School of Finnish National Ballet and to other professionals in roles that support opera and ballet arts. The fund supports art and other purchases as well as measures to increase the popularity and support of opera and ballet.

Fine Musical Instrument Fund

The Fine Musical Instrument Fund of the Orchestra of the FNO was founded thanks to a donation from a private individual. The purpose of the fund is to enable the purchase of fine musical instruments of the Finnish National Opera Orchestra in order to enhance the artistic quality of the orchestra and support Finnish opera and ballet arts.

Kenneth Greve’s Fund

The original investment in the fund was provided by the Artistic Director of the Finnish National Ballet, Kenneth Greve. The purpose of the fund is to support the work of the Finnish National Ballet and its Ballet School, while upholding and further developing artistic quality in both organisations. The fund can award grants and stipends to dancers, choreographers and other professionals, students and schools representing ballet arts. In addition to this, financial support and donations can be given to the Finnish National Ballet and the Ballet School.

Professor Alfons Almi’s Stipend Fund

The fund was founded to commemorate the opera singer, long-term opera leader and the driving force behind building the new Opera House, professor Alfons Almi. Its initial investment came from donations made in his memory after his death. The fund awards grants to the members of the Orchestra of the FNOB to raise the artistic quality of the orchestra.

Mikko Franck’s Stipend Fund

The fund was founded after a donation by the conductor Mikko Franck, a member of the Board of Directors of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation. The purpose of the fund is to uphold and further develop the high artistic quality of opera and ballet. This is achieved by awarding grants and stipends to professional opera and ballet artists or outstandingly talented students.

Matti Ahde’s Scholarship Fund

The fund was founded after a donation by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation, Matti Ahde. The purpose of the fund is to promote dance and vocal arts by awarding scholarships to support the education of at least one dancer and/or singer yearly.

According to income taxation law, donations of 850 to 50 000 euro to the Foundation of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet or the Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation are tax deductible for companies and organisations.

Fundraising permits

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet Foundation

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet Foundation has a fundraising permit RA/2017/661, granted by the National Police Board on 22 June 2017, valid from 1 October 2017 to 31 January 2019 in all of Finland, aside from Åland. The funds collected will be used for the foundation’s operations to advance the cause of opera and ballet arts.

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet Support Foundation has a fundraising permit RA/2017/660, granted by the National Police Board on 22 June 2017, valid from 1 October 2017 to 31 January 2019 in all of Finland, aside from Åland. The funds collected will be used to advance the cause of opera and ballet arts as well as for grants to individuals working in the field of opera and ballet.

How are the funds used?

The funds collected will be used for the operations of the non-profit foundation to advance the cause of opera and ballet arts. The funds will not be added to the foundation’s capital, but are used immediately to fulfil a purpose laid out in the rules of the foundation as follows:  

The funds collected are used to:

Support the artistic operations of the opera and ballet. The funds collected can be used for staging opera and ballet productions in ways that can be considered to support and add value to the productions, including hiring visiting artists, selected productions in the Main Auditorium, organising tours to improve awareness of the FNOB, covering the costs of free-to-view opera and ballet broadcasts and recordings, and other performance-related expenses.

To support audience outreach. This includes participatory artistic activities, performances and events directed at special audiences, and further studies for those already professionally employed in the field of audience outreach.

The funds collected cannot be used to support the basic education of the Ballet School or basic art education, nor to support or enable the foundation’s business operations permitted by the rules.

The funds collected are used to:

Grant awards, stipends and scholarships to creative and performing opera and ballet artists or other professionals involved in supporting the field of opera and ballet arts. The grants can be given in Finland and internationally.

Support the artistic operations of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet by purchasing fine musical instruments for the orchestra members, to support the organising of opera and ballet tours in Finland or abroad, produce opera and activity workshops for children in Finland, pay for the visit of an internationally renowned guest artist, choreographer, conductor or another visitor, which would not be possible otherwise, to help create the sets and costumes of opera and ballet productions in ways that support and add value to the productions. In addition to this, the funds can be used to promote opera and ballet arts and to improve the appeal, attractiveness and awareness of the Opera House both nationally and internationally by purchasing art and other goods.

The FNOB fundraising team is supported by a Fundraising Committee comprising of voluntary friends of opera and ballet. The members represent a cross-section of the society.
